youthHansa at the Hanseatic Day in Visby

Sand in between your toes, meeting old friends, wind that blows through your hair and an appropriate amount of screaming seagulls. Here’s a recap of all things that happened at the 45th Hanseatic Day in Visby.

With delegates arriving at every hour of the day, the opening ceremony of the annual event was attended by many. All were welcomed by a lovely rendition of ABBA classics, which set a festive mood for the rest of the event. After this, delegates made their way to play introductory games at a get-together organized so everyone could meet program-wise, and that they wouldn’t have to organize a big get-together on their own. After the get-together had finished, the delegates made their way to a big introductory dinner at a wonderful restaurant. When the dinner had concluded and everyone was content and full, delegates were let loose to explore the island and the atmospheric city of Visby.

This year, due to the accommodation being quite far away, all delegates had access to bikes. This made them more mobile, so more of the surrounding and outer parts of Visby could be explored – in a sustainable way! Some delegates ventured to the cliffs and others went to visit the famous house of Pippi Longstocking. There was much to see in such a short time!

The Youthhansa program had a lot of variety this year, with the youths being able to go treetop climbing or attend lectures about sustainable tourism. There was even a whole lecture centered around mental health in youths, presented by researchers from Uppsala University. During this lecture, many important and rarely discussed topics arose, leading to an informative dialogue with tons to think about. Of course, the annual assembly shouldn’t be forgotten. This year, there were no elections, but there was still a ton to present. From a new Hansa Links book to a recap of the wonderful Mini-Hansetag in York.

But after all this hard work of climbing, thinking and listening, it was time to let loose and enjoy other parts of the program that were provided. On the second day of the program, there was a wonderful pool party set up for us. Delegates enjoyed a variety of activities like going to the sauna, taking a plunge in either the pool or the nearby sea, warming up near the fire and eating delicious barbecue food. After that we were excited about the Hansa Party. Where food, drinks and conversation flow deep into the night, accompanied by the occasional dance break. This year, this lovely party was hosted in some ruins, next to an ancient bar. A Hansa Party is never a Hansa Party without some kind of performance and this year, we were all treated to a fire-eater show.

All in all, the 45th Hanseatic Day wouldn’t have been what it was if not for the amazing delegates and organizers who poured all their passion out to create a once-in-a-lifetime event. We can only hope to see all of you again next year in Stargard!
