The Hanseatic League, with the city of Lübeck as the “head of the Hanseatic League”, dominated northern European trade for around 400 years, and Dorsten was part of it thanks to the capillary network of inland shipping. Since the Archbishop of Cologne granted the town charter in 1251, Dorsten grew steadily and its strategically favorable location with a crossing over the River Lippe made it an interesting trading hub. Dorsten can boast merchants in the registers of the trading offices of Riga or Bruges and also had numerous shipyards for shipbuilding in the Lippe valley with its own type of ship, the “Dorstener Aak”. On the guided tour through the old town, the Hanseatic merchant tells stories from Dorsten's past, an entertaining look at family chronicles, trade relations, old houses, churches and monasteries. The exciting journey ends after approx. 90 minutes in the historic Old Town Hall on the market square with a stimulating “Hanseatic drink”.
