Free Hanseatic City of Bremen
Bremen's relationship with the Hanseatic League was unsteady and controversial. The Hanseatic League expelled the city on the Weser from its ranks a total of three times, only to readmit it a few years later each time. Today, Bremen is known for its sights such as the World Heritage ensemble of the Town Hall and Roland statue and the cosy "Schnoor" old town district. And of course there are the world-famous figures of the Bremen Town Musicians from the Grimms´ fairy tales. Also worth a visit is the Freimarkt, Germany's oldest folk festival, which was celebrated already in Hanseatic times.
