From June 22 to June 25, 2023, youthHansa participated in the 43rd International Hanseatic Day hosted in the enchanting city of Torun. With the participation of 85 delegates from 35 Hanseatic Cities across 7 countries, this year's program drew inspiration from Torun's legacy as a city of inventors and explorers.
Activities ranged from crafting gingerbread to historical tours through the city center and visits to diverse exhibitions, spanning from modern to historic. Delegates had the flexibility to choose activities aligned with their interests, ensuring everyone engaged in something they enjoyed. Ample free time allowed delegates to explore the city, savor delicious gingerbread, and participate in various Hanseatic activities. This event provided a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends from previous years and forge new friendships.
On Friday, a warm welcome awaited with a concert organised by one of the hosting schools, featuring local youth showcasing their talents in singing, dancing, and comedy. During the assembly of delegates on Saturday, pre-Hanseatic Day activities of the youthHansa, including the Peace Festival in Harderwijk, the Hanse novel and the activities of the working groups, were highlighted. A significant discussion ensued, resulting in the decision to raise the entry age from 15 to 16 years. The assembly also witnessed the unveiling of the official youthHansa logo and discussions on organizing more regional youthHansa communities. The event aimed to strengthen the connection between guests and the hosting country, with young Polish diplomats participating in engaging discussions.
This year, guests were invited to create a better link to the hosting city/country and the youthHansa. The young Polish diplomats joined our assembly and discussed who they were and what they did. The traditional Hansa Party on Saturday featured music, food, and drinks, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with entertainment and joy. The closing ceremony on Sunday marked the end of a memorable time in Torun, where bonds, both new and old, were reinforced. As the event concluded, delegates bid farewell, returning to their respective Hanseatic Cities with cherished memories.
