Novel "Hanse Links" enables international exchange

The Hanse Novel was written by students from several European Hanseatic cities. The result is a multilingual volume of stories from the Hanseatic era. In the foreground of the book is a fictional, exciting narrative, which is selectively based on the historical facts of the respective Hanseatic city. A very important part of the project is the mutual acquaintance of the authors and the cities in which they live. Thanks to an Erasmus+ grant, visits to Emmerich (May 2022), Harderwijk (September 2022), Gdansk (March 2023) and Kaunas (April 2023) could be organized.

The EU is a community whose strength comes from the individuality of its member countries and their people. The Hanseatic League Book Project was initiated in 2019 to enable young people who are to guide and support the fortunes of the EU in the future to experience this. Each group writes its own novel set in the time of the old Hanseatic League. In terms of content, the students are free to do so, but a true historical aspect from their own Hanseatic city history should be included. During the writing process, the participants exchanged ideas with each other, first via videoconferencing and emails, and later by visiting each other. In this way, a collaborative project developed whose strength lies precisely in the individualities of its participants. Hence the title of the book "Hanse Links". Among other things, the individuality is also documented by the fact that each group wrote its novel in its national language. The reader can find corresponding translations via links on the Internet, also in reference to the book title "Hanse Links".

The first volume has now been published. In addition to Emmerich, schools from Gdansk in Poland, Great Yarmouth in England, Harderwijk in the Netherlands, Kaunas in Lithuania and Lübeck, the "Queen of the Hanseatic League", have collaborated. Starting at the end of March in Gdansk, the book was presented at press conferences in all participating cities.

The writing of the 2nd volume is already in planning. Newly joining the project will be La Rochelle in France and Toruń in Poland. Schools from other Hanseatic cities are also cordially invited to participate in the Hanseatic Book project with their students. If you are interested, write an email to info@wotys.de. It is also crucial that everything that is done during the book project can be decided by the participants themselves.
