UNESCO World Heritage Fagus Factory
In 2011, the Fagus Factory in Alfeld was the first modernist industrial building to be awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. The Fagus Factory was the first building to be built by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius. It represents an architectural concept that, for the first time at the time, took into account the need for light, air and clarity and used glass and steel in the spirit of the new construction style.
Shoe lasts were produced in the Fagus factory for more than 100 years. Today, fire protection and measuring systems are manufactured here. Exciting factory tours allow you to take a look behind the scenes. The Fagus-Gropius exhibition and the multimedia UNESCO visitor center offer exciting information about the World Heritage Site.
