Tartu kicked off its European Capital of Culture year

Tartu is one of the European Capitals of Culture 2024. The cultural year in the Estonian Hanseatic city was officially opened on 26 January with a colourful live show in the open air. With more than 1000 events planned, Tartu presents itself as a young, hip cultural metropolis with crazy highlights - from a mass kissing event at the town hall market to the "Naked Truth" sauna debate festival.

The motto of the European Capital of Culture year in Tartu is "Arts of survival". By the end of the year, more than 350 projects with over 1000 events will take place in the city and the south of Estonia.

The program is divided into four areas:

Highlights include the mass kissing event "Kissing Tartu", the sauna debate festival "Naked Truth" and an Estonian-Danish theatre play about the Danske Bank money laundering scandal. In addition to Tartu, Bad Ischl in the Salzkammergut region and Bodø in Norway also hold the title of European Capital of Culture this year.
