The old Hanseatic town of Schwerte lies at the geographical centre of North Rhine-Westphalia, between the Sauerland and the Ruhr area. The Ruhr, which gives the region its name, flows through Schwerte over a length of 11 kilometres. The "Hanseatic City on the Ruhr" is a lively, medium-sized town surrounded by wooded mountain ranges and the scenic Ruhr Valley with the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, which accompanies the course of the river from Winterberg to Duisburg.
