Osterburg (Altmark)

Osterburg – which means „castle in the east“ – is a likeable small city located in the Altmark (Old March), a region in the very north of the federal state Saxony-Anhalt. The 10.000 inhabitants appreciate their little rural town situated among vilages, woods and meadows. Osterburg‘s founding year dates back to 1157 when a „Count Werner IV. of Osterburg“ was mentioned in a document. But archeological finds from the 10th century indicate that Osterburg is much older. Although Osterburg is not attached to the sea, its location by a medieval trading route from Magdeburg to the cities in the North- and Baltic Sea area, has brought wealth in former times. And due to its trading activities, Osterburg has been a member of the Hanseatic League between 1436 and 1483.
