Limbaži is one of the oldest towns in Latvia. It was established between the lakes of Lielezer and Dūņezers as the residence of the Archbishop of Riga, in a sense as a daughter town of Riga. The coat of arms of Limbaži is similar to that of Riga. Hard to imagine today: until the 16th century, long-distance trade goods came from the Baltic Sea on the later silted river Svētupe. The city was a member of the Hanseatic League.
