Lemgo

The Old Hansa Town Lemgo was founded in 1190 by Bernhard II. Prince of Lippe, at a crossroads of two important medieval trade routes. For a long time, Lemgo was the biggest and most important city of the Principality of Lippe. That is how Lemgo became a member of the Hansa. The membership was first documented in 1295.

Today, Lemgo has 14 districts with almost 43.000 inhabitants in total. In the early 1980s, Lemgo joined the new Hanse, and in 1983, Lemgo was a founding member of the Westphalian Hanse. The city is officially called Old Hansa Town Lemgo; this unique title was given to the city by the Prince of Lippe in 1916.
