The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany with a population of around 1.85 million. Even in the Middle Ages, Hamburg was an important trading location and one of the leading cities of the Hanseatic League. With more than 600 breweries, the city was also known as the "Brewery of the Hanseatic League". Today, Hamburg is still the "gateway to the world" and the Port of Hamburg is one of the largest transshipment ports in the world.
