Jan D’Hondt | Visit Bruges
Kontor of the Hanseatic League
As a Hanseatic trading center, the city experienced its economic heyday in the 15th century. Worldwide trade contacts turned the city into a cosmopolitan center.
After the Beguinage and Belfry were declared World Heritage Sites in 1998 and 1999, the entire city centre followed in 2000. Bruges is particularly famous for its brick Gothic architecture and the authentic, organically grown medieval city center. The city is also the birthplace of the “Flemish Primitives”.
