Medieval Town of Toruń

The medieval city centre of the Polish city of Toruń on the Vistula has been remarkably well preserved to this day. So much so, that UNESCO declared this “exceptionally complete picture of the medieval way of life" as a World Heritage Site.

Medieval World Heritage

As the first city founded by the crusading Teutonic Order in the Baltic region, Toruń quickly developed into one of the political and economic centres of the region as part of the Hanseatic League. The magnificent Gothic town architecture reflects this period of wealthy merchants. St. John's Cathedral and St. Mary's Church are particularly important examples of this. The birthplace of the famous astronomer and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus, with an integrated museum, and the old ruins of Toruń Castle can also be visited here.
