Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar

On the German Baltic coast, the old Hanseatic cities of Wismar and Stralsund are reminders of the heyday of the Hanseatic League. UNESCO recognized the old towns of both cities together as a World Heritage Site for their impressive brick buildings from the Hanseatic period.

At the Hanseatic core

Wismar and Stralsund were at the very core of the Hanseatic League from the beginning. It was in Stralsund that the League celebrated its greatest triumph: here, in 1370, it was able to dictate the Peace of Stralsund to the Danish king Waldemar Atterdag granting it far reaching trade privileges. Today, impressive brick churches and carefully restored gabled houses in both cities bear witness to the civic pride of old times. In the port of Wismar, a faithfully recreated Hanseatic cog invites you to take a tour. In Stralsund, the German Maritime Museum and the medieval town hall with its towering façade are also worth a visit.
