Lübeck Old Town

Hanseatic City of Lübeck

On the banks of the Trave and Wakenitz rivers, the impressive silhouette of Lübeck - the old queen of the Hansa - rises with its seven towers. As an example of "the power and historic role of the Hanseatic League", UNESCO designated Lübeck's old town as a World Heritage Site.

Queen of the Hansa

Geographically well situated, Lübeck quickly rose to become one of the most important trading centres in Northern Europe. The representatives of the Hanseatic cities met here for their Hanseatic Diets and trade flows from all directions converged. Today, the history of the city can be experienced on every corner. Monuments made of brick tell of the wealth and splendour of what was once the most powerful Hanseatic city. The famous Holstentor gate welcomes visitors to the city with its late Gothic façade. The European Hanseatic Museum brings the everday-life of the Hanseatic merchants back to life and shows how influential the Hanseatic League still is today.
