Since its launch 40 years ago, the European Heritage Day has become a European success story with more than 20 million visitors.

The events take place every year in September in the countries that are parties to the European Cultural Convention. Numerous monuments and historical sites are open free of charge on this day, allowing visitors to learn more about their shared cultural heritage. The aim is to encourage them to become actively involved in protecting and enhancing this heritage for present and future generations.

An overview of the monuments open in Germany can be found here.

Information on events in other countries can be found on the European Heritage Days website.
