Koknese

Koknese is situated on the scenic banks of the River Daugava and the River Pērse, about 100 km from Rīga. Koknese got town privileges in 1277 and flourished as Hanseatic city during the 14th century. In 1420 the castle Kokenhusen became summer residence of the Archbishop of Riga and in the 16th century it was their main seat. A railway that connected Koknese with capital city Riga was completed in 1861 and made Koknese a popular holiday resort for Riga citizens. Today culture and history dominate the city and, together with the scenic surroundings, make Koknese worth visiting. Major cultural and sport events, as well as a variety of cafés, increase the interest of the visitors.
